Found this story over at Slashdot, links to this NY Times article:
Quote
"Texas' Director of Science Curriculum was 'forced to step down' for favoring evolution over intelligent design (ID). She apparently circulated an e-mail that was critical of ID — although state regulations require her not to have any opinion 'on a subject on which the agency must remain neutral.' 'The agency documents say that officials recommended firing Ms. Comer for repeated acts of misconduct and insubordination. The officials said forwarding the e-mail message conflicted with her job responsibilities and violated a directive that she not communicate with anyone outside the agency regarding a pending science curriculum review.'"

The central bullshit here is that an educational agency "must remain neutral" about teaching science over religion.  Education is where this issue actually matters and they shouldn't be allowed to fuck it up so badly.

I agree, that is some major bullshit.

I wonder if they are neutral on alchemy vs. chemistry, or gravity vs. little fairies that pull everything down to the earth...

Hell's bells. All this hoopla over the Sudanese teddy bear, but this never made the local radio?

Texas is terrifying. A former colleague of mine was grabbed from her dorm room at 6am, hauled to jail in her pyjamas, and thrown in with criminals for 48 hours because her car permit was filed incorrectly. She was two months past her eighteenth birthday. Crazy. Next we'll hear they burned a witch.
