Well, it has been all over the news.  Not only is Morgentaler a leading pro-choice activist, but he was also the first President of the Humanist Association of Canada, and held that position for over 30 years.

My thoughts:  About freaking time!  Although there is still a lot to be done to make abortion accessible to women in rural and remote areas.

I am so happy Morgentaler has been apointed. He's been such a champion of womens rights for his whole life.  How many other people given this honour have risked their lives everyday for women's freedom and safty?  People love to call Humanists immoral, but when you look at how entirely Morgentaler has stood up for what he believes in, and imagine the enormous personal sacrifices he's made to do so, how can anyone say this man is without ethics or beliefs (even if some strongly disagree with them).

I was especially annoyed with Stephen Harper for speaking out against Morgentaler's apointment.  The dignified thing to do would have been to say nothing.  Sometimes I think the Harper government geniunely hates women, and when Harper came out against Morgentaler's apointment, I was so saddened that our country is run by a party that continually ignores the rights and needs of half the country's population and aparently goes so far as to speak out against those rights.  Sigh.
